Mayim Bialik Talks About Voicing Medusa
You might recognize Mayim Bialik from her roles in Blossom or The Big Bang Theory. This amazing woman has degrees in Neuroscience and Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and she acts in films focusing on heavy subjects ranging from science to war. When I talked with her on the phone yesterday, I had to ask" What drew you to The Dog Who Saved Halloween? Laughing, Bialik answered, "Everyone needs to have a little fun sometimes."
Although she has done voice acting in the past, this was a bit different. Generally, a voice actor over-dramatizes and doesn't necessarily get to see an image that corresponds with the voice part. However, in this film, the director didn't make changes to Bialik's natural voice. She thought it was fun being realistic. She also was able to see the animations for Medusa. The big challenge Bialik had to overcome when representing Medusa was figuring out how to show depth in the dog's personality. "When you play the villain," Bialik adds, "It's easy to be only one level." But she knew the whole plot, and she knew Medusa wasn't all bad. This challenge gave Bialik a new-found appreciation for voiceover work.
Living in a No-Media Household
Bialik and her husband have two young sons. They have a holisitic parenting style, and educate their sons in the Waldorf tradition. In order to encourage imagination, the children live in a no-TV zone. They don't know what she does for a living and haven't seen her work. However, someday they will grow into television viewing organically. When they do, Bialik will be happy to show them The Dog Who Saved Halloween.
She grew up with a conservative view of visual media, and this film meets her criteria. It's great for family watching since it's clean. Bialik points out that it has great actors, which is a treat for children. And, as an additional bonus, the film is fun for parent's too.
Aside from some mild bathroom humor, my kids and I enjoyed the film. It's always nice to have some fresh titles on hand when a holiday approaches. In our opinion, one go wrong on Halloween when cute dogs get involved with intrigue.
