Personal accounts, home videos and newscasts merge to bring a viewer a timeline of the Vietnam war. It shows events from home and overseas.

It's my personal belief that no film or book ever hits the shelves without some sort of slant. That said, Vietnam in HD from A&E Entertainment comes as close as my critical eyes could see to toeing the objective line in its 282-minute documentary.

Understanding the Vietnam War

It began at the very beginning, and for the first time ever, I understood that we weren't just over there to help some people who were struggling. Our fighters were really combating communism and oppression. It was a battle unlike previous battles where the soldiers put in long, traumatic hours and days in order to wipe out an army that just kept getting stronger.

When I watched this film I was across the world and several decades away from the Vietnam War, but I had to turn off my surround sound because the vibrations and sounds of the weapon-fire and bombs were a bit traumatizing for me. I can't fathom the reality of being there where shutting off the sound wasn't an option.

What I Hope My Children Get From Viewing This Film

No, this is not a film I would recommend for children. But older teens? It might be good for them. Not only will they learn more about history, but hopefully they can relate to the fresh-faced young men and women in the film. It would be my hope that a film like this would show teens and parents how blessed they are to not have to worry about getting drafted. I want them to see oppression and its devastating effects so they can help prevent it in the future.

I appreciated how this film showed the soldier's side of the story - both good and bad. I also appreciated how it showed the side of the protesters. Everyone was emotionally involved. If there is any fault I would point out in the film, it was in the fact that it barely mentioned the paratroopers, but I guess I'm throwing a bit of my own bias in there on that one, eh? If you are an adult, I highly recommend this documentary from the History channel. As for the kids? Preview it first. It will provide a powerful message for some, yet might traumatize others. As it says on the disc and at the beginning of each film, the visuals are graphic. They include live footage. War is not pretty.
